TallyPrime

The TallyPrime interface (the modern standard for Tally accounting software) is built for speed, keyboard-friendliness, and simple navigation. Unlike traditional point-and-click software, Tally allows you to navigate almost entirely using the keyboard or a mouse.

The Tally interface is organized into these main structural sections:

1. The Top Menu Bar (Application-Level Controls)

Located at the very top of the screen, this strip lets you control system-wide features without disrupting your current work:

  • Company: Create, select, alter, shut, or back up company data.
  • Data: Manage split data, data repair, or data migration from older versions.
  • Exchange: Synchronize data across multiple locations or upload e-invoices.
  • Go To / Switch To: One of Tally’s most powerful features (shortcut: Alt + G or Alt + C). It lets you jump to any report, voucher, or master page instantly from anywhere in the software, without losing the screen you are currently working on.
  • Help: Access user guides, shortcut lists, and license management details.

2. The Gateway of Tally (The Home Screen)

Once you select a company, you land on the Gateway of Tally. This is the core hub of the software, split neatly into options on the left/center and details on the right:

  • Masters: Where you create and manage structural components:
    • Create/Alter: Build Ledgers, Stock Items, Voucher Types, and Currency formats.
  • Transactions: Where daily business activities are recorded:
    • Vouchers: Record Receipts, Payments, Contra entries, Journals, Sales, and Purchases.
    • Orders & Inventory Vouchers: Manage purchase/sales orders and delivery notes.
  • Utilities: Import/Export data and banking tools.
  • Reports: Instant real-time financial statements, including:
    • Balance Sheet
    • Profit & Loss A/c
    • Stock Summary
    • Ratio Analysis

3. The Right-Hand Button Bar (Action Panel)

Running vertically down the right side of the screen is the Button Bar. The options change contextually depending on what screen you are on, showing you available keyboard shortcuts and actions:

  • F2: Date (Change the working accounting date)
  • F3: Company (Switch between active company profiles)
  • F4 to F10 Shortcuts: Quick toggles for specific actions like changing voucher types (Contra, Payment, Receipt, Journal, Sales, Purchase) or filtering reports.
  • Ctrl + A: Accept/Save current screen (universal save shortcut).

4. The Gateway Footer / Status Bar

At the bottom of the screen, you will find information regarding:

  • Current Period & Current Date: Ensures you are posting transactions in the correct financial year.
  • Active Company Name: Displays which company profile is currently open.
  • Calculator / Query Box: You can press Ctrl + N to activate a quick inline calculator to compute numbers directly inside a voucher entry screen without switching applications.
